Warning, layman's reply - inflammation is not of itself harmful, it's necessary, the problem - generally - is, as we age our inflammation tends to become "over-reactive" ie, it doesn't switch off - so 24/7 our tissues are slowly, but surely exposed to inflammation, which is when they start to degrade.
