I bought a house at a mortgagee sale in 1982. When you buy at a mortgagee sale you're responsible for getting the owner or tenant out. This house was rented to some lowlives, the owners had gone to Aussie and hadn't paid the mortgage.

I bought the place at an auction for $30,000, it was a mess. I made a fortune out of it, but not without a lot of grief. The tenants had cut a hole in the floor in one of the wardrobes for the kids to get in after school from under the house, the place was filthy and the first time I walked in my legs started itching - they were black with fleas. The toilet was so filthy I had to throw it out, it was unable to be cleaned up. I broke in with the builder I engaged after I took possession and all these lowlives were asleep with their kids about 10 in the morning in one room, we had to make a quick exit. Absolutely disgusting how some people live. I turned off the tap at the water meter and smashed it, and when they were out I got a bin and threw all their furniture in it, and then it rained. They were gone within day or two. I sub-divided the section and built another house out the back.
