If a debtor fails to repay the real value of a debt, is there any way that the debtor's IOUs won't be devalued?

In particular, does it make any ultimate difference by what mechanism (inflation-devaluation or deflation-default) the creditor fails to receive the real value of what's owed?

In other words, what's the point of this debate?
