    In the acquisition process the board of directors will recommend the offer that is made to all the shareholders and they will approve or not. In general the board of directors go for the highest price of course so in reality you as a small shareholder just wait and your shares are converted into either cash in your bank account or if it's part cash and part shares you'll get some cash and some shares in the acquiring company - e.g 50% in cash and x amount of WD shares (or Intel or whatever company). This is the basics of it.
