In reality the choice is not that simple. Much depends on the investment technique used.
Alpha, I believe, felt more at ease with "other stocks" with perhaps less risk. And he was quite entitled to be that way.
He would have had followers and would have been acutely aware of this as well; another reason to select less risky stocks.
