    You're right, desal plants do require a lot of power. It's not so much the desal part, but the pumping of the water. They would only have a carbon footprint if the power supplied to the plant comes from coal/gas and not wind/solar.

    Also, I forgot to mention that the fed government announced that they will be building 4 flagship solar plants in Oz. They said they would be around 2 to 3 times larger than any other currently in operation around the world.
