Our political stability helped make Australia until recently, arguably one of the the best locations in the world for long term storage of high level nuclear wastes. Unfortunately, the political divisiveness of the current government is destroying the political stability of this formerly egalitarian country.

Where once we were the nation of the fair go, now we find ourselves divided into "lifters" and "leaners". Less than two year ago we were looking towards equality in education and healthcare with the Gonski reforms and NDIS. Now we are sinking, hiding and pushing back boats. We are attempting to tax poor people when they need a doctor. We are pretending poor people don't drive cars. We are attempting to legalise bigotry. We are attempting to divide our country along racial lines. We have elected a government that is deliberately attempting to impose these policies on the country because it fits their Tea Party mentality, their ideologically rigid, ultra right wing agenda.

If we let these supposed grown ups get away with it, we can wave goodbye to political stability.

Our wonderful country is full of geologically and geographically appropriate places for nuclear waste repositories. Corrying actually isn't one of those places. Located on the headwaters of the Murray River it is in an area subject to high rainfall, geologically recent earth movements and relatively rapid erosion. Downstream of Corrying is the breadbasket for much of the country and the water intake for one of our capital cities. These facts make Corryong a really stupid place for a nuclear repository.

The best places for these repositories are in desert areas where the geology has been stable for a billion years or longer and where very few people live. This might seem like a big ask but at least 20% of Australia would be reasonably well suited.
