The net worth of the Company changes on a daily basis, whether it be through share price fluctuations, capital raisings, distributions ... whatever.
In this instance, without being too technical, % of shares held is a pretty reasonable measure for the sake of the exercise in context with the explaination asked for.
I'll just leave it that ... I'm not into pissing competitions.
