Good to see you are coming around to my way of thinking about the permit being the number 1 concern.
A typical EV can have about 5,000 battery cells. Building from there, a single EV has roughly 10 kilograms—or 22 pounds—of lithium in it. A compact car like the Nissan Leaf has 4 kilograms of lithium in it. Plug-in hybrids about the same. Therefore, the average lithium used in a PHEV + BEV car in 2020 was 6kg.
They made 3.2m PHEV/BEV's in 2020 which equates to 19,200kt of lithium. If the mine was open and produced 20,000t, it would have been more than enough to supply every EV made globally last year . Tesla produced 250,000 EV's in the US last year but are fully electric so use 10kg of lithium each or 2,500t. Tesla hope to produce in the US 1.25m by 2030 which will require 12,500t of lithium.
In the mining industry, talking to the local Caterpillar dealership is a very common occurrence. No different to you or I walking into the local Ford dealership wanting to discuss the suitability of Ford Focus vans for our new delivery business. It is not a big deal. It is to be expected.
