Ukraine is upset at the Pope for offering to broker peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.Why is that offensive?Because Ukraine does not want peace at any cost and found the Pope’s suggestion for a white flag an affront to their bloodlust.
“Our flag is a yellow and blue one. This is the flag by which we live, die, and prevail. We shall never raise any other flags,” said Ukraine’s top diplomat, Dmytro Kuleba.
“Die” is the operative word. Ukraine’s military is needlessly dying in a failed pursuit of land that asked Russia to protect and annex them.
The Pope said that Ukraine should have the “courage of the white flag.” He explained, “When you see that you are defeated, that things are not going well, it is necessary to have the courage to negotiate.” Obviously, the Pope sees what Ukraine refuses to see, namely that “things are not going well.”
The Kremlin responded to the Pope’s comments saying that they too have been ready to discuss peace all along.
