My comment that PolyNovo had been gaining traction in the NHS is simply a conclusion I’ve drawn based on a number of things.
Firstly, since October last year, the CEO has consistently suggested that PolyNovo has been gaining traction in the UK.
At the AGM last October, Swami Raote stated We continue to drive rapid adoption in UK/Ireland and Germany, and we hope to be the #1 / #2 player in these markets over the next eighteen months, if not sooner. This line was repeated during the webcast on 5 December last year where Swami Raote said PolyNovo hoped to be No. 1 or 2 in UK/Ireland and Germany within 18 months. In the JP Morgan Conference presentation on 11 January, it was stated that Novosorb BTM was becoming standard of care in UK and Germany. Finally, during the 1HFY23 webcast on 23 February, reference was made to á real pick up in UK and Ireland, followed by the comment we expect to be market leader in UK and Germany over next 18 months.
With respect to numbers, in the Annual Report released in September it was reported that the company had strengthened the UK and Ireland team from 5 to 8 people and increased UKI customer accounts by 31. Also, at the AGM, Swami Raote said that UK/IRE sales were up by 184.9% for the year.
With respect to peer/industry recognition, during CY22 Q4, an abstract titled Use of Biodegradable Temporising Matrix (BTM) in vascular surgery, authored by NHS Trust doctors, was judged to be one of the 2023 prize/highest scoring abstracts by the Journal of Vascular Societies, Great Britain and Ireland. In the same quarter PolyNovo was featured as the “Most Innovative Wound Care Device Company” in (UK-based) Global Health and Pharma’s 2022 Global Excellence Awards.
Journal articles, case reports and abstracts reporting use of BTM has grown, authored by NHS doctors in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, Lancashire, West Sussex, Mid and South Essex, Newcastle upon Tyne, St Helens and Knowsley, Wales and Dublin and Galway in Ireland.
Finally, it was noted that the Department of Plastic Surgery at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is providing online advice about BTM to patients undergoing complex wound surgery requiring artificial skin to aid healing. That advice states there are other skin products that can be used, however BTM is the chosen product at this trust and other local trusts.
So, while there’s not much in the way of “hard data”, there are multiple other indicators suggesting that BTM is gaining traction in the UK.
I guess we’ll find out more next month.
