    So what? They certainly can't see 5,500 miles, can they? 'cos that's the distance they travel, not 11,000. Not could seeing that distance help them anyway, as when they are over the sea there is nothing to reference themselves to.

    Bees range up to 5km from the hive, but they can't see more than half a metre.

    Tip, if you're ever being chased by an angry bee, or swarm, because you've tried poking them in the eye or something - lie flat on the ground. They'll miss you.
