    you are missing the whole point,

    you say,

    So what? They certainly can't see 5,500 miles, can they? 'cos that's the distance they travel, not 11,000. Not could seeing that distance help them anyway, as when they are over the sea there is nothing to reference themselves to

    the question should be,

    how did they evolve the need to travel 5500 miles, wouldn't they just find a closer environment and "adapt" to it? and you say, "travelling overseas there is nothing to reference"

    then shouldn't we just marvel at God's handywork, the dragonfly?
