Eh I wouldn't do it but know people that sleep in a single room with 3 kids and rent out every other room plus a granny flat. Did it long before the current situation as it allows then to pay off their place and an investment property.
Life is all about working out what comprises you are or aren't willing to trade off. For some money is more important than privacy. Personally I chose to buy a place I could easily afford so I have privacy.
