I think if you are the type of person that sits on the internet predicting a property crash because you dont own your own home that would be my definition of a loser.
But other than that alot of people's circumstances restrict them from doing the things they want and I have experienced that situation. But I also think that your circumstances would have to be fairly extenuating like divorce, jail, been in a coma etc , if by 40 if you wanted to you had not purchased your own home.
