3$ gas is over the shakers, not in the formation. so when the mud comes up it goes over shakers to clean the returns out, this is where they take the reading from, background is air, 3% hydrocarbons in air is pretty high and normal for having drilled through HC zones. The release said this gas was seen during drilling through the upper zone, so may be substantially smaller net than 44m. Logging will tell...
