Actually ben I think the poison in the US has come from rampant unbridled capitalism not socialism.
And the huge government deficits were started by George Bush and his Republican (highly capitalist) Political Party. Now continued under Obama's Democrats. So whoever you vote for you get massive spending and deficits.
