Correct. Which is why the US installed Saddam Hussein in Iraq, as a counter to Iran's growing influence in the region. They then promptly invaded when SH veered off the script with too many of his own ideas it had nothing to do with bringing democracy there... it was about oil. Not saying SH was a saint, so very far from it, but the machinations are far from simple.
The reason that the Ayatollah Khomeini's uprising succeeded in ousting Shah Reza of Iran in 1979, was that the British were ripping off Iran on oil, and the Shah was not pushing back enough. The traditionalists like Khomeini opposed the erosion of their traditional bases of power, and exploited difficulties from a high failure rate for new farms and an exodus of agricultural workers to an alienating atomised life in the Iran's major cities.
So desperate ordinary people having no share in the wealth from the oil, and smarting from poorly implement changes backed the uprising. With dreadful results.
Something similar happened in Gaza when the Palestinians voted for Hamas and then couldn't get rid of them. Desperate people do desperate things. It's a mess.
