The West Australian ran a full page article today on the link between sleep apnoea and serious cardiovascular effects, ie, heart attack or stroke.
To summarise
The US surgeon general has declared sleep apnoea to be an official risk for high BP, as studies have shown MODERATE sleep apnoea increases the risk of hypertension 3 times.
SEVERE sleep apnoea may turn out to lead to an even greater risk of cardiovascular disease than smoking or hypertension, with the risk of serious CVA's being five times healthy people.....but those diagnosed and treated properly did not have the same risks. The death rate was 3.5 times higher if untreated.
4% of middle aged men and 2% of middle aged women suffer from this now......and increasing hugely as we get more obese.
Sleep apnoea also speeds up hardening of the arteries and the build up of calcified plaques....and when accompanied by snoring, this increases the risk of these being dislodged into blood vessels.
The heads of large sleep clinics believe there should be a public health campaign on the issue.
Anyone know the waiting list times at your local sleep clinics....or in the US...or in Europe?
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to be diagnosed and treated faster and more accurately( see the glasgow presentation)?
Like I said, it just needs people with vision! Keep the faith!!
