8.0 Conclusion
UCG has failed to show it is either a safe or an effective form of energy production. UCG trials have repeatedly resulted in contamination of air and water and the Australian experience has shown that the industry is unable to control its toxic emissions. As with all fossil fuels, UCG further exacerbates climate change. Australia's experience with UCG demonstrates that this technology carries significant risks to human health, agriculture and the wider environment. Not only has it cost workers their health, local communities and farmers their future but has provided a significant impost on the public purse with the current Queensland government investigation costing $6.5 million. The potential hazards to human health, agriculture and the wider environment are far too serious to take the risks associated with UCG development. _________________
