Power Plants in Limbo.
Power Generators are starting to cut back on long term
maintenance spending and are refraining from entering
contracts for future electricity supplies,as the energy
sector braces for new financial shocks flowing from
Federal climate-change policies.
It comes as a consultants report has found energy retailers
could suffer financial distress or even fail as they are
squeezed by volatility in wholesale electricity prices due
to costs associated with lower carbon emissions.
Hong Kong-based power giant China Light& Power-which owns
the Yallourn power station in Victoria through TRUenergy
has revealed that uncertainty around emissions trading
is already having a "significant negative impact" on
power generators. [end]
China has around fifteen UCG projects under construction
at present. With an Asian company familiar with UCG now
being threatened with uncertainty over Victoria's future power
generation, how much longer will it be before UCG becomes
the saviour of the Victorian brown coal fields.
Now is the time to remind the Rudd Government that Russia
has been using brown coal successfully for over fifty years
via their UCG power plants.Once adopted here then Copenhagen
would judge Rudd/Wong as climate change Warriors with the
capacity for memorable leadership. However as it stands now
there is nothing but utter confusion.
Finally..Maybe Len's favorite two words "International-
Funding" are now being applied in a subtle way on the
Sindh Government..after all if one company can do a JV,
so can another. :)
