Of course if you gasify 20,000 tons of coal you are going to produce MORE benzene than if you gasify just a few tons, but it doesn't mean you'll produce a higher CONCENTRATION of benzene.

If a few tons gives you 0.7ppb, when you burn a few more tons it will give you another 0.7ppb at that location, not 1.4ppb across the whole plant.

The end result is, you get 0.7ppb across a wider area than before. It still rapidly drops to zero due to diffusion after you leave the boundaries of the gasifier.

And how big is this area? Let's see.

They want to gasify 20,000 tons. Coal has a density of 1.3 tons per cubic metre. So that's about 15,400 cubic metres of coal.

The seam at Kingaroy is about 10m thick. So that's about 1,540 square metres of area taken up on the surface.

That is a square region 39 x 39m!

Less than one-fifth the area of a rugby field. Within this area you may get 0.7ppb benzene, but only if you drink water directly from it. Within 100m of the site levels will be back down to the limit of detection.

And even if you did drink from the site itself, it would still be healthier than drinking a soft drink.
