This is actually quite a complex area. I won't even pretend to know all the ins and outs (a medical oncologist or NM specialist/radiologist would have a much better understanding about all of this), but the current structure is not such that anyone can get a scan if its ordered by a doctor. Certain types of imaging are only covered by Medicare for certain indications. I know PET scans especially have quite complex and stringent rules around its use.

The issue with Medicare is that a committee decides what the government will cover. Typically, anything that is necessary for patient care would be covered, however, there a many time when things are not. Doesn't mean that you can't access these things, it just means that they won't be as universal in their uptake since there is usually a significant financial burden associated with it.

Now, I'm not going to sit here and say that Magsense would necessarily fall into this category and wouldn't be covered. But there would be a process. If Magsense becomes the gold standard, then you would think that it would certainly be covered by Medicare. But this will likely be a long process. Why? Because first we need to show that Magsense works in humans, then we need to do a comparative-type study to show that it is actually better than the current imaging methods, then consideration around funding of scans would need to be made, including what specific indications it would be covered under. Personally, I'm convinced that the human trials are going to be successful, and what the company has been saying so far does seem to indicate that it is likely better than imaging techniques such as PET, but time will tell.
