Two very interesting articles this AM. The first says China is dropping restrictions on imports, "The report said at least eight integrated circuit (IC)-related tariff codes were exempted from levies imposed earlier this month"
At this point if this is rumor or fact If true it could be the mellowing of these tariff wars. We just have to avoid making conclusions and see what happens
China said to waive retaliatory tariffs on some US chip imports in sign of trade war thaw | South China Morning Post
The second is much more suspect. If this Nitrogen Iron based perm magnet is as good as they say, discover as long ago as they say, and as easy to make as claimed. Then why is it not a major source of PMs already. Again key is in what is not said. We saw a dozen years ago when China cut off supplies to Japan of REE how quickly 100s of millions of $ were spent on alternatives. Tesla was using copper async Moters at time and made millions selling their controller technology. I am not saying this will replace REE based PM. What I am saying if supplies of REEs become a real big problem that stops shipments of cars and Air conditioners. Billions will be spent finding substitutes. This will have results and that changes everything. How and when is up for debate but if supply becomes questionable then it will happen. 30 ~ 40 years ago only engineers involved with liner and stepper motors knew about REE magnets.
China-born scientist’s magnet made without rare earth element could now help US
PS I only said Commercial products and deliberately left out military. Putting consumer suppliers under stress will always result in more money faster, with less restrictions, than militaries and governments will ever do. Look back a dozen years to embargo of Japan where did the money come from. Toyota, GM, MB, BMW, and other users of Perm magnets, Not governments.
