Gina Rinehart has shares in several rare earth companies, including:
• Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: LYC):Rinehart's company, Hancock Prospecting, has a 7.14% stake in Lynas, which is one of the only rare earths producers outside China ¹ ² ³ ⁴.
• MP Materials Corp. (NYSE: MP):Rinehart has a 5.3% stake in MP Materials, which owns and operates the Mountain Pass rare earth mine in California ⁵ ⁴.
• Arafura Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: ARU):Rinehart has a 10% stake in Arafura, which is developing the Nolans Project in the Northern Territory ¹ ⁵.
• Brazilian Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: BRE):Rinehart has a 5.8% stake in Brazilian Rare Earths, which has a rare earth project in Brazil ¹ ⁵.
These investments reflect Rinehart's strategic interest in the rare earths sector, which is critical for the energy transition and the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines, and other technologies. However, I seriously doubt that Rinehart has any interest in renewables, other than the profit motive. To that end, the obvious opportunity that comes to mind from current interests, is the opportunity to amalgamate these companies, pinch the IP from Lynas and introduce it to all the other companies. The cautionary note here is that Lynas share holders could be the collateral damage in this exercise.
