Carbon is an element in the period table. It's an important element in bonding other elements to make molecules of materials. Many people confuse Carbon with soot and other particles associated with the burning of coal.
Back in the 50s in London coal burning fire places emitted a lot of sulphur and fly ash, this combined with fog and created what we now call 'smog'! The London smog killed many people and the use of sulphur contaminated coal was made illegal.
These days all coal fired power stations remove all particle material before it is released into the atmosphere.
Ironically, before there were restrictions placed on these power stations, I know for example in the US, that pasture lands near power stations actually improved, because of the nutrients released from the smoke stacks. There are many fertiliser ingredients released such as Sulphur, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium as examples and for another example the very poor soils around Wallerawang, near Lithgow improved out of sight when the Wallerawang power station was commissioned all those years ago.
So in rural areas what a bonanza for farmers - free fertiliser!!!!
