The only record we have of the event states that he didn’t want to do it.
Which says it all. It is the only record. Nothing from Roman sources. Jesus was of no consequence to the Romans. The Pharisees were just a pain in the proverbial to Pilate, wanting Jesus killed for some ridiculous non-crime relating to their internal politics. It’s more than likely he went along with it in the end just to keep the peace. Christianity didn’t even exist then, so it could hardly have been a threat to Rome.
