Warren through Berkshire likes to gain international exposure through buying companies that do a majority of business abroad. If we think Coca Cola as one example. Although, he has been searching (Europe) and buying (Israeli metal works Iscar) as prime examples of shifting the goal posts; not because he feels the need to, but it makes sense at looking for giant elephants that cannot be made in the U.S that is large enough to "move the needle".

In regards to your search, the best would be an index fund tracking the market (U.K, U.S or emerging) via an index fund. Low cost of course is the prime goal. But you could do better. It appears that you have a selection of LIC's that would classify you as a long term investor, so a mutual such as the fairholme fund (fair.x) run by the ever humble Bruce Berkowitz is a great way to just buy and hold. Look them up, do some research. They are exactly the kind of guys you want to run your money. They own a substantial amount in Berkshire Hathaway and White Mountains and you feel like a part owner. The other way to go is just buy BRK.B and never look back.

(Unless you want to bring a sense of time and analysis to understand individual businesses [and there is a great many out there, i posted on the arg site a company by the name of Wells Fargo which is outstanding], then a well run mutual or index is the way to go).
