IFBF Sustainability, climate change & the IFBF January 2022 "Grand Tour"

    Dear Xxx

Sustainability and climate change will be the two topics dominating news stories over the next two weeks as delegates gather in Glasgow for COP 26.  We can expect lengthy descriptions of the damage to the environment coupled with extensive debate and discussions about what needs to be done and what can be achieved at national and international levels. Long duration energy storage is going to be an important part of the way that we change our power system, and as enthusiasts for flow batteries we want to make sure that we talk about flow battery successes.  We would like to hear any news about discussion of flow batteries at COP 26 – if you are there, please let us know.

Last week, I was pleased to be invited to speak in the Energy Storage Global Conference, hosted by the European Association for the Storage of Energy in a hybrid between Brussels and the web.  Flow batteries were high on the agenda, with updates from many of our friends including Cellcube, Volterion, and Engie.  The messages from the conference were topical:  safety, concern for the environment, development of the storage business case, improving the regulatory framework and the need for decarbonisation of the power system.  The discussions covered the need for longer duration energy storage, opening the opportunity for participants to comment on the role of flow batteries and the scale of the opportunity for deployment of flow batteries.  It’s certainly an exciting time in our industry, with flow battery companies listing on the New York stock exchange, the US DOE funding flow battery development with several smaller companies and supply agreements for electrolytes and other materials signed by the largest players in the industry. That means there are many good examples of flow battery successes to publicise and promote in our future activities.

We are planning two events for 2022, a web-based “Grand Tour” of the flow battery industry in January 2022, and our more usual summer (June 2022) conference with oral papers, posters, panels, and discussions.

There is a growing demand for energy storage, and we are sure that the flow battery industry has the capacity to meet that need.  But we are often asked whether the flow battery industry and its supply chain can produce sufficient flow batteries at realistic cost – we will address this question in our IFBF “Grand Tour” in January.  If you would like to open your flow battery doors to the world, please email[email protected]so that she can send you more details about how to get involved.

    Let’s keep talking flow batteries!

    Best wishes

    Anthony Price
