Getting into Uni isn't the hard part at all.
Although my school was considered pretty good (It was still a public school), I don't know anyone who actually put in the work during high school and didn't get into any course they were interested in.
Also internationals don't tend to clog up the uni like you may think, they pay a much higher rate to go there (For example, My fees are around 5k a semester, an international's are 5k a subject) which means they provide funds which the universities use to continuously expand their buildings and departments.
Our number is very high, but it is certainly not at the detriment to the Australian community.
