Rob Towner is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Triangle Energy Ltd (ASX:TEG), an experienced oil producer and explorer with operations located in the Perth Basin, approximately 270 kilometers north of Perth, Western Australia. Triangle holds a substantial (32.71%) equity interest in ASX listed State Gas Limited (ASX:GAS) who are advancing the development of the Reids Dome Gas Project (PL 231) aimed to supply the shortage of gas in the eastern states and bring gas to market as quickly as possible.

What’s your journey in becoming a CEO?A career spanning 25 years in the financial equity markets provided insight into a wide range of sectors, management styles (many characters) and cycles. After departing the equity markets directly, I have advised and founded companies in both the biotechnology and energy sectors. Having done a bit of everything, I wanted to focus personally on my leadership aspirations and a sector with longevity. The Oil Sector won.

Tell us a bit about your business and how you are commercializing?Triangle Energy’s main project, the Cliff Head Oil Field in Western Australia has been commercial since 2006.

We have produced Oil continuously for 15 years and are in the final stages of the Cliff Head Renewal Project which if approved to implement will extend the life of the field beyond 2024. Having confirmed a base case 7.2 million barrels of oil to bring into production, we will be very busy for the next 2 years.

How are you managing with the current COVID-19 pandemic on both business and personal front?We have been very fortunate on one hand and on the other, there was nothing to do but manage it. Firstly, from an operations perspective our Cliff Head Oil Field is already operated remotely as it is 3.5 hours north of Perth and from a Health Safety and Environment perspective our regulatory capabilities to address COVID -19 are very much in check with our government regulatory requirements already. Managing our revenue and costs is the main thrust of any business, so in this case, business as usual.

On a personal front, it has been a great opportunity to reset and spend time with my family.

What’s the most exciting thing about running your business?Energy sources and options must be one of the most debated and mis understood things in the global economy. I have for years made time to read the newspapers and online news daily. To be frank, there is never a common thread in the energy space and I am excited managing our revenue from oil production. Adapting to the cyclical nature of commodities is about protecting for the down dips. Working with our staff and suppliers towards this and everyone coming to agreement to this outcome is an achievement alone. Then of course the real exciting bit is drilling for new discoveries, that is super EXCITING!

How do you measure success?Success can be measured with time. Play the long game, set the strategy and play it out using a 7-8 years’ time. If you make it to this point, you have succeeded and set the next period or perhaps it is time for someone else to have a go with complimentary skill sets.

What do you think is the most important quality of being a CEO of a listed company?Having a good hold on all aspects of the business dynamics and open communication with staff, stakeholders and shareholders.

What is your favourite movie?Gallipoli. It has a bit of everything and embodies the Australian spirit.
