The "pristine" environment of Majors Creek and downstream areas including the Aruluen Valley that you reference are in fact largely the regrowth remnants of destructive mining practices carried out in the last century. The very aggressive sluicing and dredging operators gave no thought to fauna or flora and certainly no thought to water quality issues. Thankfully we have moved on from these dark days. CRC with relevant government agencies have worked very hard to identify and address the realistic and verifiable concerns of the local community. Of course there are those that will never be satisfied no matter what the outcomes. Very apt tag Tooli.
