I don't believe he "told" people to short SYR rather he said SYR was HIS favourite short - a big difference. Whether he actually had any outstanding shorts/lost money - who knows.
Some of his messages are still sound if you are a long term investor, as opposed to short term trader, bergo33. As with everything, separate the fact from the fiction also the reality from the hype - and that includes looking deeper into company anns.
The fact all these graphite companies keep coming out with anns that get punters excited/pumps up the sp is part and parcel of the stock market games.
The important thing is to not be left holding the parcel when the music stops.
