To add my 20c worth to this topic.
After 25 years of active investing I've found myself to be much better at selecting great fund managers than picking individual stocks. I research the people whose full-time job it is to make investment (buy/sell/hold) decisions. Look at their team, their process and the mandate for the fund. (e.g. can they go short, hold large % of cash, etc).
You could look at some type of Wrap product if you dont want to go to fund managers directly or buy LICs or ETFs on market. But there are fees for this wrap product. Beware some financial planners will charge like wounded bulls via ongoing fees, so if you are confident you can apply directly, as a self-directed investor. The pros are that the tax statements are all done for you, plus wraps often have access to a large selection of boutique fund managers.
Speaking of financial planners, find a good one. Go armed with as many questions as you can. Would look for one who charges on a fee-for-service basis rather than planners who are remunerated from the products they sell. And like another post said, you dont have to blindly take their advice. There is no substitute for doing you own research. It's your money.
