It's always concerned me that accountants suggest a SMSF to their clients as
opposed to recognized funds, purely on the basis that they will audit same for
generally 1% of the fund assets and in doing so, completely ignore/not establish the clients investment skills and knowledge, if any, in this area.
The rule of thumb for the first 4 years should be 60% equities, with a caveat that
only LICs are used for that purpose and 40% cash (term deposit)
So, how would the last 4 years have performed? Examples, not recommendations,
shown.
WAM 14%pa (Australian equities)
MFF 17%pa (International)
Cash 2.5%pa (Term deposit)
About 11%pa combined. Not too shabby at all and I'll guarantee, towards
the top end of 95% of all SMSFs in their start up years.
