Financial advisers will usually look at your overall financial situation before giving specific advice. Besides investments, that would also include super, personal insurance, debt and tax position.
While its fun to dabble in shares etc. for investments, you could be blind sided by a huge tax bill, or be wasting a bunch of money on insurance you don't need. There's more than one way to accumulating wealth. Not wasting money (or not paying a load of tax) is just as valid as making it. In fact it's easier.
With $500K in your pocket, if you are not prepared to spend $250 for an hour-long sit-down session with a planner, than you are not serious about the long term view.
Btw. You can always research the planners research.
