Mr Hockey is due to meet with the Chinese finance minister in Washington and said he would bring up the topic of iron ore.
"Obviously we don't control commodity prices, but I think everyone has a responsibility to ensure that our supply to key markets is consistent, predictable and reliable," he said in response to a question about BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto flooding the market with extra ore.
