You are correct and i would not expect anyone to be looking after shareholders interests. As shareholders have absolutely no liability for anything that occurs and are happy to take profits for this when times are good, they must expect to have to deal with the downside as well.

Doesn,t mean they aren,t hard done by just you have to look after your own interests. Being happy that you are protected from any liability when this is ended.
