The Kitumba/Kakozhi/Mutoya/Mushingashi systems exhibit the classic regional and local criteria commonly associated with world class IOCG deposits. Following ground reconnaissance work in the mid-late 1990s the airborne FALCON AGG survey in 2004 was the catalyst to advance the IOCG exploration efforts in the Mumbwa area whilst minimising the technical risks.
Despite a 5-year, 50+-hole, 35+km drilling campaign the understanding of the IOCG mineralisation in the Mumbwa area remains incomplete. This is primarily due to the sheer size of the IOCG footprints of the Mutoya and Mushingashi prospects, but also due to possible supergene enrichment at Kitumba. The evidence of deep and irregular zones of leaching and oxidization, and the inferred variability of a possible zone of supergene enriched mineralization below this irregular zone of oxidation, points to a complex distribution of Cu mineralization at Kitumba. Ground based geophysics (3D IP/MT) and additional drilling is currently under way at Kitumba and at the new FALCON AGG prospect, Kakozhi, to address this issue.
