Something that seems to be the future is the IoT connected objects. IoT means Internet of Things.

Connected to a Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) or Low-Power Network (LPN) is a type of wireless telecommunication network designed to allow long range communications at a low bit rate among things (connected objects), such as sensors operated on a battery.

There is few manufacturers in Australia but it will boom soon.
However there is only 1 upcoming LPWAN network and 3 existing in Australia so far!

Sigfox / Thinxtra - Proprietary - Already some devices - Low power consumption
LoRaWAN - Open  - Already some devices - Low power consumption - No devices yet.
IoT CAT-M1 - Open - No devices yet.
NarrowBand-IoT (Cat M2) (upcoming) - Open - No devices yet.

I think that normally only the Open source technologies can survive but there is many example of company working against the Kerckhoffs's principle through the security by obscurity, that anyway managed to make Billions$!!

I think we should look at manufacturers that are going to be booming in the world of IoT connected object using LPWAN,
