Back then they said the Sun drives the tropospheric weather system, where it establishes temperature differentials to drive convective systems and evaporates large quantities of water to provide for interesting instabilities within these convective systems.
You should have a good look at that and then have a good long think why would they think that and to think they did not need to apply FLAT EARTH mathematics as you do.
