    Climate and Clean Air Coalition

Not to be confused with our Coalition of the undecided & unwilling LOL.

Australia are involved! For how long one wonders?

    From the above website.

    Domestic activities

From 1 July 2012 Australia has put a price on greenhouse gas pollution by introducing an emissions trading scheme. The scheme has started with a fixed price of $A23 per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Australia’s carbon price covers sources such as stationary energy, industrial processes, fugitive emissions and non-legacy waste. The carbon price will apply to methane and nitrous oxide from these sources, as well as to carbon dioxide.

As well as the incentives provided by the carbon price, Australia’s renewable energy target encourages methane reduction. Incentives to reduce methane include financial rewards where methane from landfill or sewage is captured and used for electricity generation.

Australia’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) allows farmers, land managers and waste facility operators to create credits that can be sold to other businesses that want to offset their emissions. The CFI includes reducing methane emissions from various agricultural and waste activities.

Synthetic greenhouse gases listed under the Kyoto Protocol, such as hydroflurocarbons (HFCs) are not covered under Australia’s emissions trading scheme, but face an equivalent carbon price through separate legislation. The Government will also provide additional incentives to destroy ozone depleting substances and waste synthetic greenhouse gases such as refrigerants from 1 July 2013.

Australia recognises that smog, including black carbon, can increase the incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and has been regulating emissions from vehicles since the 1970s. Australia continues to adopt increasingly stringent air pollution emission standards in line with international developments.

    International activities

Australia is a member of various international initiatives that contribute to reducing short-lived climate pollutants, including the Global Methane Initiative and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases.

Australia’s aid program includes both targeted and multi-sectoral initiatives that deliver improved environmental outcomes across many developing countries. As part of Australia’s $599 million fast-start contribution, Australia has provided $20 million to the Energising Development Partnership (EnDev), to deliver improved cookstove technology in developing countries. Improved cookstoves reduce black carbon emissions and also contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, including environmental sustainability and child and maternal health.
