If you are sophisticated investor and willing to commit decent size of your porfolio to trade with that broker, you can generally get a much cheaper brokerage rates.. Generally around 0.5% + GST is the minimum you can get.. With IPO, you only get charged the selling brokerage.. That's one reason why I like trading IPOs.
There is at least one full service broker that give free trades if you pay a minimum fee of several grand a year..
If each of your trade is at least 6 digits, you'll make up those fees in no time..
As swoosh said, the most important thing is relationship with your brokers.. Appreciate what they do and trade as often and as large as you can.
