I'd be sceptical about giving Greatland too much credit for the Telfer minevlife extension, neither Newcrest nor Newmont really wanted it and it existed through a revolving door of 18 month plans for the last few years. Greatland have no choice but to extend that, given it's the only mine they own, and they are in a very fortunate boat whereby Newmont spent a huge sum of money on the infrastructure during the extended downtime created by the damage to TSF7. Toward the end of the repair period, Newmont were quoted as saying that TSF7 would, and I quote, "never ever ever be used again".
As part of the sale arrangement, Newmont has been covering the cost of the uplift stage to TSF8, which is great, but Greatland has come along and optimistically announced that another uplift of TSF7 is an option. I'm no guru but that sounds like playing with fire. I'd guess that's a throwaway line and obviously significant research and engineering will be undertaken in the future before that became a viable option.
In the short term... I understand the staff on the ground are currently undertaking negotiations regarding an EBA, after being royally shafted by Newcrest with the last one (now expired). I'm told Greatland are only offering a few tidbits, but I'm not sure if the specifics. They only have one mine and without a happy crew they won't be producing anything, so I'm interested to see how that goes before committing too much money to it. Northern Star are poorly regarded as the lowest paying gold miner in WA and with a large contingent of ex NST folks there seems to be some skepticism as to the intentions, but I'm a glass half full person so let's see how it goes.
