I've got a 1GB SanDisk MP3 player. It is excellent. You keep the music that you want on your PC and download up to 1 Gig worth at a time which takes about 2 minutes and you can swap and change when ever you want. That is plenty of music, when you want to change it you delete it and download more music from your PC.
The iPod's software locks you down so that can only update music from the PC that originally run the iPod up from. It directs you to their website to buy music from them. I don't personally like the iPod's they are big heavy compared to the MP3 player which is light and eaisly put in your pocket.
