The U.S. military's Al Asad air base in Iraq is under attack, and, as expected, Iran is the culprit.
Iran has claimed responsibility for more than a dozen missiles launched into Iraq targeting U.S. forces. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed that this is just the beginning of a “fierce revenge” for the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general, terrorist, and head of the Quds Force.
Again, Iran's retaliation was expected. We took out one of Iran’s top military officials, and rightly so. But we knew there would be retaliation, and this is the consequence. But, as of right now, it appears there have not been any casualties or injuries to American forces. As long as the damage from Iran’s missile attack is not lasting, it’s unlikely the Trump administration will respond with further escalation against the Iranian regime.
President Trump is a lot of things, but he’s not a warmonger.
With that said, the U.S. should expect additional attacks from Iran abroad. Our military bases are now targets, especially those in the Middle East. But we are not unprepared, and Trump has made it clear the U.S. will not tolerate accelerated aggression from a regime that has overplayed its hand.
Iran should tread carefully. The regime has far more to lose from an escalated conflict with the United States than we do. And if Iran continues down this path, it will have a serious price to pay.
