Most of the big Bank traders have Limits called "Loss Referral Levels". These are dollar amounts the trader is allowed to loose on a Mark-to-Market basis, before management tell them to cut the position. I suspect that a few of these limits have been triggered this morning in London, and the traders who are selling don't have any say in the matter.
