Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) has showcased a motherboard - PF 88 - that is designed to run both, an AMD K8 and Pentium 4 processor on the same motherboard. The dual-processor combo has been made possible with the introduction of a converter card for the AMD K8 processor and DDR400 memory module, which makes it compatible with the Intel LGA775 chipsets.
The P4 motherboard and the K8 converter card both use the SiS northbridges, the SiS656 and the SiS756, while the southbridge of the motherboard is utilized by both the platforms. The motherboard can support up to 4 GB of dual-channel DDR2-667 memory according to ECS.
According to Adam Chou, senior manager of marketing, the motherboard has been designed to support the x86 architecture 64-bit extensions and dual core technologies being developed from both the processor manufacturers - Intel and AMD.
The company plans to launch the PF88 in April and the motherboard is expected to hit stores by May. The estimated price for the P4 motherboard will be $60-$70 and the AMD K8 converter card will cost $25-$30.
