The English too are often cast as the 'baddies', but the English peasantry were treated as badly as anyone. The Enclosure Acts forced people off the land and then into the "dark Satanic mills", where they lived a horrible existence that was de facto slavery.
But again, this is of little relevance to life in 2020.
