"The theory may be simple, and the potential enticing, but the path to developing geothermal energy has been rocky, writes Stephen Wisenthal. The hot spot in resources exploration this year is shaping up to be heat. Dozens of companies are now exploring for high-temperature rocks around Australia, which they hope to tap for almost limitless amounts of green energy. And in the process, an industry which has spent barely $100 million on exploration in its first six years has already committed to spend another $650 million, on leases that now extend to almost 200,000 square kilometres. Several of the companies trading on the ASX, including Torrens, Petratherm and Green Rock, have a strategy of seeking geothermal resources close to potential markets, but not necessarily at the highest temperatures."
